Halloran was not having a good Saturday afternoon, either. He had gone into work with the idea of finishing up some paperwork that he could leave on the secretary’s desk to type up. Although there were plenty of officers working on Saturdays, they were mostly deployed in anticipation of the usual round of brawls, family altercations and random violence that peppered the weekends. But the office staff only worked Monday through Friday, so he was spared the chatter, the drop-ins from other offices and the noise of the typewriters and telephones ringing. If they rang at all, the operator fielded them downstairs.

He had barely got his thoughts together on a burglary case when he sensed someone coming down the hall and put his head up to see the unhappy face of the Police Chief.

Halloran screwed the cap back on his pen and gave the man his full attention.

“What do you think of this Dominic Barone?”

That wasn’t what Halloran had anticipated to be the opening line. “I think he is capable and hard-working. And he knows the North End. Why, what’s the matter?”

“The Mayor’s the matter.” The Chief remained standing, which was never a good sign.

“The Mayor went to some event in the Sons of Italy Hall and a smoke bomb was thrown into the room.”

Halloran’s eyes widened. “A bomb? Or a smoke bomb? Is everyone okay?”

“Nobody injured. But the Mayor’s ego has been badly damaged. Evidently, he was just getting into the swing of things with his speech when it went off and that was the end of him being able to talk. There was pandemonium and when things calmed down, everybody left.”

“Who told you this?”

“That sawed-off, know-it-all Henry what’s-his-name who works for him was on the horn as soon as the dust cleared. And he wants Dominic on the carpet tomorrow morning.”

“It’s Sunday. It’s his day off. Why Dominic?”

“I know it’s Sunday. But he’s to be at the Mayor’s office at 10 a.m. sharp. And he better not consider it to be working overtime. And why? Because he was on duty today.”

“I know that,” Halloran said.

“The Mayor, or at least his little shadow, thinks that he should have either prevented it from happening or have caught the perpetrators by now.”

“That’s asking a lot.” Seeing the Chief’s scowl, he amended his comment. “If you don’t mind me saying so.”

The Chief pointed his index finger at Halloran. “I do mind you saying so. Because it’s not your place to do so. And as his more experienced partner, you’ll be there, too.”

In response to the pained look on Halloran’s face, he continued. “And don’t give me any malarkey about having to go to Mass with your ailing mother. I know she is in perfect health, and you haven’t been going to Mass much lately anyway.” He stalked out of the room, leaving Halloran to wonder how the Chief knew such things. Sometimes Boston was a small town, indeed.
